Abstract:	In Tokyo, in the quiet neighborhood of Umezato, Suganami Ward, there is a medium sized Buddhist temple called Saihōji. As far as Japanese temples go, there are far grander. Yet, according to the monk I spoke with who swept the paths of its cemetery, a steady stream of visitors, both Japanese and foreign, come there. They come to pay homage at a large memorial stone that towers over a small area near the back of the cemetery. This stone, approximately three meters tall and over one meter wide, bears a title written in classical Chinese characters, and a text of approximately 1500 kanji, written in a masterful calligraphic hand. Its text was composed in 1927, but it is written in an older, literary, even poetic style. It honors the “merit” and “virtue” of Usui Mikao Gyōhan, “founder of a spiritual method.” It compares Usui to important religious leaders, and to the sages, philosophers, geniuses, and great men of ancient times. It credits Usui with establishing a new method of improving body and mind based on the reiki of the universe. People came from far and wide, asking to receive healings from Usui and to learn his method. Today, almost eighty years after Usui’s death, millions of people around the world, including most of those here today, practice versions of his Reiki Ryōhō or Reiki Therapy, and look to him as their spiritual forefather. Indeed, tracing one’s lineage to Usui Mikao is a defining factor that distinguishes Reiki from other forms of spiritual practice. In this talk, I present Usui’s life and work in terms of his significance in the world of Japanese spiritual healing. I highlight both what was unique in his teachings and commonalities Usui Reiki Therapy shared with other therapies of Usui’s time. First, I present a biography of Usui and describe some of his practices based on the few surviving Japanese language sources. Next, I contextualize Usui and his practices in his contemporary seishin ryōhō or reijutsu, which I translate as “psycho-spiritual therapies” or “spirit techniques.” Finally, I say a few words about Usui’s legacy in Japanese history.
Résumé :	À Tokyo, dans le quartier tranquille d'Umezato, Suganami Ward, se trouve un temple bouddhiste de taille moyenne appelé Saihōji. En ce qui concerne les temples japonais, il en existe de bien plus grandioses. Pourtant, d'après le moine avec qui j'ai parlé et qui balayait les allées de son cimetière, un flot continu de visiteurs, japonais et étrangers, s'y rend. Ils viennent se recueillir devant une grande pierre commémorative qui domine une petite zone située à l'arrière du cimetière. Tout d'abord, je présente une biographie d'Usui et je décris certaines de ses pratiques en me basant sur les quelques sources en langue japonaise qui ont survécu. Ensuite, je contextualise Usui et ses pratiques dans son contemporain seishin ryōhō ou reijutsu, que je traduis par "thérapies psycho-spirituelles" ou "techniques de l'esprit." Enfin, je dis quelques mots sur l'héritage d'Usui dans l'histoire japonaise.
