Abstract:	Tomabechi Gizō (1880–1959) was one of the twenty shihan (Master-level) students trained by Usui Mikao (1865–1926), the founder of Usui Reiki Therapy (Usui Reiki Ryōhō). He was raised in present-day Aomori prefecture, at the northern tip of Japan’s main island of Honshu, and is a descendent of the feudal lord Uesugi Norimasa (1523–1579). In 1903, he graduated from the applied chemistry department of Tokyo Industrial Senior High School (present-day Tokyo Institute of Technology). At the time he studied under Usui-sensei, from 1923 to 1926, Tomabechi worked for Greater Japan Chemical Fertilizer Co. (now Nissan Chemical Industries), where he eventually rose to be company president. He also served as president of Daiichi Kagaku Industries (another chemical company). After the war, Tomabechi became a politician, serving three terms in the House of Representatives (1946–1952) and one term in the House of Councilors (1953–1959). In 1951, the same year his memoir was published, Tomabechi was one of six Japanese signatories to the San Francisco Treaty that settled the terms of peace between Japan and the Allied Powers (except China and the Soviet Union). I first became aware of Mr. Tomabechi through the writings of Frank Arjava Petter. In This is Reiki (Twin Lakes, WI: Lotus Press, 2012; originally Das ist Reiki, Aitrang: Windpferd, 2009), Petter identified Tomabechi as one of Usui’s shihan students and published a translated excerpt from Tomabechi’s memoir, which included stories about Usui-sensei, an explanation of how Usui Reiki Therapy works, and recommendations on how to lead a healthy life (Petter 2012: 254–257). As there are very few firsthand accounts about Reiki Therapy from this time, I was grateful that Mr. Petter had found this precious text and assumed that it represented the relevant section of Tomabechi’s memoir. Thus, I was surprised, some years later, to discover that this chapter of Tomabechi’s memoir contained more details about his experiences with Usui Reiki Therapy and further, fascinating reflections on the relationship between mind, body, illness, and health. Even the passages that Petter had translated were somewhat condensed, omitting some information. This inspired me to produce my own translation, which I now present to you.
